Witches of Northamptonshire

Image
Back in July 1611 Agnes Browne, Ioan Vaughan, Hellen Ienkenson, Mary Barber and Arthur Bill from Northamptonshire area were sadly executed at Northampton, their crime Witchcraft!   Around this time there was a huge outbreak of Witchcraft accusations across England, Europe and as far as America. Neighbours would turn against neighbours, family against family! Both young and the old were both accused and especially anyone old and living on their own. One single bad look given and you could be accused of hexing a neighbour or making cattle ill! No one was safe during this terrifying time of accusations and fear!  More often it was women who were a target though some men also accused and executed for the crime of being or helping a witch! As was the case at the executions at Northampton of Arthur Bill.  Many people, mostly innocent, sadly lost their lives due to these astonishing accusations and beliefs in the supernatural!  Please visit this link to find out more a...

Partial Eclipse of the Sun!

Image
Tomorrow morning in the UK there will be a partial eclipse of the Sun. The biggest solar eclipse in the UK since 2015.  I remember standing out in my garden in 2015 and feeling a cool breeze as the eclipse occurred which was kind of cool yet spooky! You can see why ancient ancestors thought it was either the gods, witchcraft or magic!  Please visit this website for more information and details on times.  https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sciencefocus.com/space/solar-eclipse-2021-uk/amp/

Witches Sabbath by Claes Jacobsz Van Der Heck!

Image
Blimey is it June already?!!!! Where has time gone? Well as we approach that very special date of the Summer Solstice this month I thought I would post some images and links to interesting witchy things! And you cannot get more witchy than the fabulous painting of the Witches Sabbath oil painting by Claes Jacobsz Van Der Heck 1663. Within the painting there are so many characters and symbols of what we regard today as typically Witch related. If you click on the link below it will take you to the actual image of the painting and you can zoom in to see strange creatures, cats, and even witches on brooms! The RIJKSMUSEUM, the museum of the Netherlands, also has many other interesting artwork available online to view so it's well worth a virtual visit and maybe a actual visit once covid restrictions are eased.  A couple of images from the painting showing witches cat, cauldron and strange creatures!    https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/SK-A-2373
