Making a spirit doll part one
The idea of my spirit doll is that is handcrafted using bits and bobs and that anyone of any age can make one.Though I recommend adult supervision for younger children as some sharpe object are used in the making of the doll.
Firstly the really fun bit gathering your spirit doll making supplies. You will need twigs, wool or string, feathers, stones, fabric scraps, beads, sequins, really whatever takes your fancy. You can pick twigs from the ground in your garden, or whilst walking the dog. Please don't snap twigs from trees as it won't add good vibes to your doll plus it is not kind to the tree!
You will also need some glue, pipe cleaners or wire scissors and an awl
Now the idea behind my spirit doll is to take some time out from the rat race and to spend a couple of hours rekindling the joy of making something like you used to do with a mind of a child. No preplanned sketches, no sewing, no rules! They don't have to be perfect in fact they are better if they are not. You don't need to give them legs or even give them a face! Just relax, feel positive and enjoying yourself.
As you make your doll think of positive thoughts, maybe play your favourite music, make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee. Some people like to chant a positive prayer as they make them or add items to their spirit doll that mean something to them. Maybe that one earring that belonged to a loved one, or a little scroll with a poem. The doll can be a reflection of yourself, of what you want to be! Unlike a voodoo doll a spirit doll is about love and positive energy!
Make a hole in your stick using an awl. Please make sure an adult does this bit as an awl is a sharp object. Don't worry if your stick splits as you will be wrapping wool around it.
Thread your pipecleaner through your stick to create arms.
Bend the ends over for hands.
Run glue along the stick and wrap with wool. If you want morw shape add more wool to create hips, bust etc.
Add more glue and wrap pipecleaner arms with wool
Now leave over night or until glue dries. Your doll is now ready for the next stage.
