Northamptonshire Witch Trails

Image
The Northamptonshire witch trials took place in 1612, and five people were executed for witchcraft on July 22 of that year: Helen Jenkinson: Accused of bewitching cattle, Jenkinson was pricked and found to have the "Devil's Mark" on her body. Mary Barber of Stanwick: Accused of bewitching cattle and a man to death, Barber was described as having "mean parents" and being "monstrous and hideous both in her life and actions". Arthur Bill of Raunds: Accused of bewitching a mother and daughter to death, as well as cattle, Bill's mother also accused sadly killed herself in prison. The Witches of Northamptonshire

The terrible ordeal of swimming a Witch was possibly used for the first time in the Northamptonshire Witch trials. The suspect would be tied up, the right thumb to the left big toe and vice versa. In this position she (mostly) was then secured by ropes and thrown into a deep stream or pond three times. If she sank (and often drowned) she was deemed as innocent - if she 'fleeted' (floated) then she was 'guilty' and then had to face the terrible fate of either being hung or in some countries burnt as a Witch! This article is in respect for the poor people wrongly accused of Witchcraft and who lost their lives on the 22nd of July 1612 accused of being Witches.  We remember you.  Rest in peace.  The sad and terrible fate of the witches of Northamptonshire.
