The magic of Michael R Miniatures!

I am very fortunate to know so many wonderfully talented artists and regard many of them my friends. One of my youngest friends and up and coming new artist is Michael Robbins. He is a very talented young man in the arts both as craftsman, painter and also dancer! Definitely one to watch! I was very lucky to grab him during his busy schedule for an interview.

How long have you been doing miniature making and what got you into making miniatures especially the type of miniatures you specialise in?

I’ve been making Miniatures for around 4 years now I think. As a collector I have always loved collecting unusual and quirky things and one day I thought maybe I could give this a go myself... so I did! What spurred me on the most was a wonderful box gifted to me by the very talented Nikki Rowe that was filled with clays, tools, oils and lots of things I could use to get me started. It was a huge help in getting me motivated and a great starter kit for me!

What do you like making the most?
Hmmmm... this changes quite often. It’s usually the thing I’m working on at the time, especially if a new exciting idea has come into my head. I do really enjoy making dragons though and of course my toadstools

What or who inspires your work?

Many things inspire me. Books, Films, Images ( usually from Pinterest) , Fellow Miniaturists etc... I’m a big fan of fairy tales and anything magical, and I love looking at Victorian curiosities and botanical sketches too

Do you do any other crafts or do you have any other hobbies?
I do but sadly I don’t get an awful lot of time to do them. As I studied dance at university, performing is always something I love to do. I like to do ink drawings occasionally, I enjoy making costumes... I’ll try anything creative that involves me making something!

What are you currently creating?
Right now I’m getting ready for the York Dolls House Fair and then on line sales. I’m currently venturing into the possibilities of 24th scale which is proving challenging but fun too that I’ll be showing for the first time at York

What future projects are you working on?
I have been asked to make a bust of a particular person by one of their costume designers after a recent one I had made for Sasha Velour (a winner of Drag Race) Its a surprise for the person, so I can’t give away any more details on this sadly but I’m excited to get started on it :)

What fairs can we find you at this year?
I will be at York Fair on June 3rd at then at Miniatura 22-23 September. I may be adding one more date later in the year but as of now that isn’t confirmed.

Do you have an online shop?
I do indeed! You can find my work sale over in my Etsy store at: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/MichaelRMiniatures

Do you take on commissions?
Occasionally although my work is mainly what I have at fairs and online due to limited time for making
