I thought this Witchy Wednesday it would be fun to celebrate some of my favourite Witches of the big screen! I say some as I started researching Witches in films I found my list growing in such size that I could fill every Witchy Wednesday for a year! π But here are a small selection to start with
πππ Witches in movies have been portrayed much like Witches in folklore as old women usually ugly and evil with long noses, warts, bad teeth. If they are outwardly beautiful it was usually down to some magical spell to seduce or lure some innocent woman or man to their impending doom! Such as Ursula in The Little Mermaid! Films used to mostly portray the Witch as the Villain, someone who needs to be dispatched or destroyed in order for spells to be broken and the good guys to win. But thankfully over the years stories involving witches have progressed a great deal. Writers and film makers realising that 'Witches' can also be something good. That some witches can be caring, wise, brave and even be super heroes! In the Harry Potter series the Witches are portrayed as normal people who can be good, bad and some in-between. That the only difference between them and us regular 'Muggles' was they could perform magic where as us 'Muggles' cannot.
πDefinition of Muggles. A person who does not possess supernatural powers.π
Though a good villainous Witch is fun to watch, and I do love a bad witch in a film, it is nice that with modern story telling even 'evil' witches are now portrayed with emotions and complexed storylines so if they do travel down a darker path there are usually an understandable reason or circumstances as to why they have become the evil villain!
The Sanderson Sisters! Though really villains they are somehow loveable thanks to the humour and clever casting of Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The iconic Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. She really was depicted as traditional evil witch from folklore with pointy hat, broom and a bad temper! Though years later through the stage production of 'Wicked' she is now a witch with feelings and a back story.
One of my favourite Witches from 1971 film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Eglantine Price is a good Witch who only wants to use her skills in Witchcraft to help the war effort and protect Great Britain against the Nazi invasion.
The very scary and definitely evil 'Grand High Witch! Played deliciously by Anjelica Huston in the 1990's version. This film was based on Roald Dahl’s book “The Witches” and was the last film project producer Jim Henson worked on before passing away. The Jim Henson creature workshop did the amazing effects including the Witches prosthetics and the animatronic mice. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
Bewitched The film follows actor (Will Ferrell) who discovers whilst filming the remake of the 60's Bewitched series that his leading lady (Nicole Kidman) is actually a real witch! A fun sweet film that is not a remake but a tribute to the original series.
The Witches of Eastwick. Best friends Jane, Alex and Sukie wishing for excitement dream up an ideal man they would like. Unaware they are witches they actually conjure up a 'spell' which ends up inviting a mysterious and devilishly seductive Daryl! All three ladies seen here doing some 'poppet' magic.
In Practical Magic the Witches are portrayed as a loving family dealing with prejudice, relationships and the consequences of magic both good and bad including dealing with a rather nasty ex boyfriend!
Hermione Granger a young Witch from the Harry Potter Film series.
A wonderful female character who could have been annoying if it wasn't for Emma Watson's warmth and comic timing. Her acting skills at a young age were in my opinion way ahead of a lot of the cast! Fearcly loyal and intelligent Harry and Ron would never have survived without Hermione studious mind and bravery!
Some folklore stories and articles about History can be quite scary and disturbing and may have some adult content. So I would always advise visiting, reading and viewing any links before showing or reading to younger children.
A couple of examples of Spirit dolls made by me. The idea of my spirit doll is that is handcrafted using bits and bobs and that anyone of any age can make one.Though I recommend adult supervision for younger children as some sharpe object are used in the making of the doll. Firstly the really fun bit gathering your spirit doll making supplies. You will need twigs, wool or string, feathers, stones, fabric scraps, beads, sequins, really whatever takes your fancy. You can pick twigs from the ground in your garden, or whilst walking the dog. Please don't snap twigs from trees as it won't add good vibes to your doll plus it is not kind to the tree! You will also need some glue, pipe cleaners or wire scissors and an awl Now the idea behind my spirit doll is to take some time out from the rat race and to spend a couple of hours rekindling the joy of making something like you used to do with a mind of a child. No preplanned sketches, no sewing, no rules! They don't have to ...
Welcome to part two on how to make a spirit doll. In the last post we made the basic body for your spirit doll using a stick/twig, pipe cleaner and wool. Now it is time to add some clothes and give your doll character. Remember spirit dolls are to be created with positivity and with whatever you have to hand. Thus this tutorial is a guide rather than a rigid tutorial. Taking a piece of fabric wrap loosely around the body of your doll. Tie in the middle, I used a spare pipe cleaner but you can use a ribbon, string or length of wool. This will be your dolls dress or robes. Remember your spirit doll can be male or female. You can also make it as an animal! Now for a head. You can use a bead, a ready made cabochon, a stone or you can create a head using air dry clay or fimo. You can of course have it head free! I made a sun head from air dry clay which I glued onto place and then painted it with acrylic paints. Different head ideas...
