Witchy Wednesdays, Creepy Christmas!

Welcome to another Witchy Wednesday as we fly like a witch on a broom closer to Christmas I thought it would be interesting to delve into the more unusual and sometime spooky side of the up coming festive period.

Other than the religious meaning of Christmas these days the festive period has now become all about presents, food, sweet treats and drinks! Most of us look forward to family gatherings, nights out with friends, parties, pantos and watching feel good movies. Our warm homes decorated with pretty decorations, Christmas trees adorned with fairy lights and sparkling baubles. We spend many hours snuggled under blankets watch ing TV munching chocolates!
But if you look into the not so distant history you find that Christmas time for most people could be quite a bleak and at times quite spooky.

During the winter months the daylight hours become much shorter and the dark nights become much longer. More of an inconvenience these days but before the invention of electricity families in the winter lived by candle light and had to keep warm next to an open fire. Living off whatever harvest they had stored away and with very little frivolity, especially those from a working class background it was a tough time! The winter months were long, dark and spooky. The bare land often cold, foggy and covered in snow. No wonder people would huddle together for warmth around the flickering flames and tell tales of ghosts, witches and monsters to while away the long dark winters, especially after a few alcoholic drinks!

Naughty children beware Krampus will take you away in a basket if you have been bad!

Not only did people tell spooky stories but in the Victorian times it was customary to send postcards including by today's standards quite strange and creepy ones! Here is a wonderful collection of creepy and odd Christmas postcards which I found on Pinterest. Can you imagine sending these type of cards today!๐Ÿ˜‚ Maybe it would liven up things if we did!

Some folklore stories and articles about History can be quite scary and disturbing and may have some adult content. So I would always advise visiting, reading and viewing any links before showing or reading to younger children.
