Witch, Brooms and Ash Wednesday!

 

Witches and brooms.

In some pre-Ash Wednesday celebrations, witches would dance around a fire and throw their brooms into it. When all the brooms were burned, it was said that winter had been "swept away". 

In Welsh folklore, Ash Wednesday was a day of gloom, and young people in remote areas were told to keep quiet and listen for strange sounds.
