Witchy Wednesday's are back! Tizzie-whizie!
Happy New Year!
Firstly thank you for joining me for my first Witchy Wednesday article of 2026. I hope you all had a wonderful festive holiday and here's wishing you all a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year.
This weeks Witchy Wednesday article is a gentle one to ease us in to things about an adorable creature called The Tizzie-whizie. This creature is both Folklore in origin as the creature has been spoken about from generation to generation. But also because of the lack of concrete evidence and sightings it is also categorised in books and talks about Cryptozoology.
The Tizzie-Whizie!
The Tizzie-Whizie, sometimes spelt Wizzie, is a whimsical folklore creature reported to have been seen on multiple occasions in the Lake District. A charming creature, unlike other scary lake monsters, this creature is small with a body of a hedgehog, proportional wings very similar in design to a dragonfly, a fluffy tail like a squirrel or a fox and antennae like a bee.
It said to be good underwater swimmer and communicates to other Tizzies in the area by making small squeaking noises.
The tales of Tizzie-Whizie.
The legend originated around 1900, credited to a Bowness boatman who regaled tourists at the local pub, the Stag's Head Hotel, with tales of his encounter. He even produced an "extremely rare photograph" of the creature in 1906, taken at Louise Herbert's photographic studio opposite St Martins Church ( see photo above).
He claimed to have lured the Tizzie-Whizie into a photographic studio with ginger biscuits and possibly milk.
There are many tales of the Tizzie-Whizie one version is that a Boatman one misty cold morning recalls seeing a strange creature perched on a rock along the shoreline. He tried to get a closer look but as he did he spooked the creature which then flew off into the thick mist. Other tales also seem to report hearing Tizzie-Whizie's squeaking on foggy mornings.
Local folklore suggests that the Tizzie-Whizie is a gentle and benevolent creature, bringing good luck to those fortunate enough to encounter it. So maybe if you ever go to the lakes in Lake District especially on a misty morning take a moment to listen out for those gentle squeaks of the Tizzies!
