WITCHES. A SONG.
THE Witches of old, could, as we are told, Do wonderful feats at their pleasure
On a broom-stick they'd fly, and skim thro' the sky, And view the vast regions of azure
By all 'tis agreed on, that Lapland and Sweden, Were famous foot Riders of Switches,
And England was noted (so Glanville* has wrote it) Of old for " the Lancashire Witches."
Old women (not men) of threescore and ten, , Of witchcraft were then the possessors
But now the old women, may 'ply to their spinning, For their daughters have turn'd out aggressors
They've seiz'd orj^the reigns, by which act our poor swains,
Perceive at their hearts some sad twitches;
Before they could cure, but now must endure The spells of «' the Lancashire Witches."
Instead of a sallow complexion like tallow, And rheum-dropping eyes, and wan virage
A plump rosy cheek, and soft eyes that can speak, ' Are the magical weapons of this age
A smile and a glance, cause a lover to dance, As if rack'd by the cholic with stitches
So great is their pow'r, that we're charm'd ev'ry hour, By some of " the Lancashire Witches."
A circle and rirag, of dire woes was the spring, And made the enchanted bemoan-'em
But now what a mir'cle ?? the ring and the circle Are accounted by all summum bonum.
Then yield, ye old hags, and dismount your wood- nags, ' Nor attempt with vain arts to bewitch us
Your empire's no more, for now we adore
The famed modem Lancashire Witches." December 6, 1810. PHILOTAS. j * Joseph Glanville, who lived in the reign of King Charles 2d. wrote the " Suducismus Triumphatus," a Treatise on Witches and Witchcraft.
