Sad loses!

Image
Firstly I was sad to hear of Michael Gambon passing today. My thoughts are with his family, friends and of course Harry Potter fans across the world.  Also I saw the news that some awful excuse for a human being has deliberately felled/killed the iconic Sycamore tree known as the Sycamore gap tree. This beautiful tree has stood quietly for over 300 years and was much loved by visitors. It was also made more famous by appearing in the blockbuster movie Robin Hood Prince of thieves.  Please visit this link for more details.   https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/sycamore-gap-tree-northumberland-live- The beauty tree as she used to be. A favourite landmark for visitors for many years. No sadly gone thanks to vandals!        Please help trees https://campaigns.woodlandtrust.org.uk/page/99702/petition/1?locale=en-GB

Witchy Wednesday! Look back in time

Image
I thought it would be nice this Witchy Wednesday to travel back in time with some old documentaries and movies about Witches and Witchcraft. Here is a fab film showing what Cornwall's 'The Museum of Witchcraft' looked like in the 1960's. I have been lucky enough to visit this Museum way back in the 70's, 80's, 90's and a few years ago. It really is a fabulous museum! This video plays on YouTube, press play 'watch on youtube'.  All the rest play via this blog site just press the arrow when you want to view it.  1970's BBC programme on Witches and Witchcraft  An interesting interview with real Witch Sybil Leek in 1963.  A 1977 interview with Witch of Wexford Janet Farrar.  Now for a real treat. Get yourself a bowl of popcorn and settle down for a couple of hours and watch the 1942 film 'I married a Witch' with the beautiful and bewitching Veronica Lake.  And to finish off some Witch themed tunes! Witch's Promise by Jethro Tull. Witch...

Witchy Wednesday is back! Blackthorn.

Image
My Blackthorn blossoming back in March 2023. I have Blackthorn growing in my little garden. In the spring it blooms with clusters of beautiful white flowers, once flowered the spring breezes cause the petals to detach covering my garden in a bed of white confetti! Then beautiful shoots of bright green leaves appear which darken as the summer advances. It then starts to produces dusty purple/blue tinged black sloes, which are ready to pick in the Autumn. Usually after the first frost. Which for those of you who like a tipple makes for a delightful gin! But any not taken for this purpose make good food for the birds. In fact the whole hedgerow makes a very valuable home for many species of insects, a place for birds to hide out, feed and shelter from the weather. Also because the sharp thorns it makes for a very secure barrier which is why farmers often used it to keep cattle away from crops and to help secure them in fields. The leaves then turn yellow and fall in the Autumn which leave...

Black Cat Sightings

Image
I know a lot of you, like myself, are fascinated by British black cat stories. Here is a link to an article published last month on Wales Online.  https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/scientist-gives-verdict-big-cat-27614310.amp Based on original article https://theconversation.com/are-big-cats-prowling-the-uk-what-science-tells-us-211762

William Shatner's Weird or What?

Image
I love watching William Shatner's Weird or What? Really fun TV series that covers allsorts of subjects from ghosts, strange creatures, alien encounters and strange events. Lots of theories and evidence, of sorts, are put forward but it's up to your own mind up if you believe them or not. Plus its presented by the legend that is William Shatner! Worth watching for that alone!

A little break back on the 20th of September!

Image
I am having a little Witchy Vaccination to catch up on some gardening and go on some mini adventures! So there won't be a Witchy Wednesday this week but don't worry fellow Witches, Wizards and magical blog readers it will be back on the 20th September!  Have a magical week see you in just over a weeks time.  Kat xxx

The Witch of Edmonton!

Image
The play—"probably the most sophisticated treatment of domestic tragedy in the whole of Elizabethan-Jacobean drama" is based on events that supposedly took place in the parish of Edmonton then outside London, earlier that year. The play depicts Elizabeth Sawyer, an old woman shunned by her neighbours, who gets revenge by selling her soul to the Devil, who appears to her in the shape of a black dog called Tom. In addition, there are two subplots. One depicts a bigamist who murders his second wife at the devil's prompting, and the other depicts a clownish yokel who befriends the devil-dog. Information from Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Witch_of_Edmonton Some people are quite rude about Wikipedia but it is a good starting point for studies. As with all studying it is best to grab information from as many sources as you can so you can analyze and cross reference it such as through websites, books and museums. But do remember that old folktales and histor...

Witchy Wednesday back to school!

Image
Welcome to another Witchy Wednesday. Well as I type on a Monday morning I can hear car door slamming, some tears and enthusiastic children running up the road to start a new term at school! Summer holidays are now over and the ever changing wheel starts rolling towards the Autumn. Though the weather at the moment suggests not quite yet as it is a barmy 27 degrees! So possibly a few more days or weeks of summer to enjoy. But with schools heading back, mostly, it's no surprise that Sky TV has been playing Harry Potter Films all weekend. This brings me to this weeks fun Witchy Wednesday topic magical schools the most famous example is of course 'Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry' often affectionately called by it's shortened name 'Hogwarts' which is located in a magical location in the Scottish highlands. This beautiful castle is the main location for most of Harry Potter books and films with stories woven into school term adventures. There is also Miss Ca...
